The game Mitoza is unnerving and prolonged. When the game starts, your mind won’t quit until you’re defeated. You control the game without pause by creating a decision with a single touch on the portable screen. After choosing a direction, a seed begins the process. You can choose to become an animal or a plant. After several choices occur that determine the path of hybridization and evolution, the initial seed’s maze of evolution is determined. This is somewhat like this: A young shoot grows from the seed, sprouting into a plant. It grows buds that produce flowers. A bowling ball flattens flowers. A bowling ball can be given a face, or even a brain, by choosing which one to have. Apple seeds sprout from the brain after it eats them. Birds lay eggs by feeding their young seeds. A carrot grew from an egg. Two fighting elephants desperately coveting a carrot hold back their desire to reach their goal. Overcoming their rival, they enjoy chewing half the carrot in two. At last, they part ways in search of new pastures. …

The game is absolutely bizarre — it pairs a If-Then structure with an unspeakably horrifying aesthetic. Playing through it confirms that no matter what happens in the game, real life isn’t quite like that. You can see why by focusing on the bowling ball with the human brain inside. You decide to study a honeybee or wasp when you observe it laying eggs. But in fact, the developing larvae instinctively devour their host, growing into an adult that eats the newly emerged wasp. Next, the flying insect is stung by another and transformed into dozens of similar drones that disperse and die. Because these events are unpredictable, no clever intellectual can choose a fly as an example. The horror game Mitoza transports players into their subconscious, where every fantasy can become a reality and the imagination can't be constrained by any boundaries. Flash games like this used to be popular on computers during its prime. However, when the platform declined, so did these games. Many of them redirected users to mobile platforms in order to maintain their popularity. This one is an exception; it's one of the last Flash-based games that exists. It features a unique brain adventure anyone can partake in. There is no official storyline or plot summary for the game. There are no winners or losers, no puzzles, no fights and no struggle. The only rule of the game is to touch the screen and select an option. Then, a 3D image with a black background will automatically appear on the screen and transform into a new form. Of course, this transformation occurs unpredictably and strangely.

I flickered through Google Play looking for a game to pass the time without motivation. My search spanned nearly two hours. Finally, Mitoza appeared. When I first saw the game's promotional materials, I was reluctant to play. The game's all-black background coupled with scary screenshots made me uneasy. I considered refusing to play, but eventually decided to go ahead with it. When I did, my contemplation led me to consider the black background further until I realized that already had and decided to continue playing. Every decision I make leaves me aghast, with no scenes to pass. The only differences between choices are one or two; they always come down to left or right. I spent a significant amount of time playing the game until my phone needed to be charged. This gave me time to think about the strange nature of its gameplay, as well as how random my thoughts were at the time. I pondered the existence of humans, their cruelty and the persistence of many species on this planet. I considered the smallness of human existence, and the fact that a creator is hiding somewhere eating popcorn. In my consideration, life and death ended at no point. Dying is another form of existence that can’t perceive the edge of life. Everything is fundamentally random and beyond our comprehension. This is why living is more of a waiting game than anything— because everything remains unseen.

Playing Mitoza can cause immense psychological damage for weeks on end. No one has ever come close to figuring out how to play it. You continuously make decisions with a single tap on your screen. No matter the circumstance, your decision will never stop. You need a seed to begin. Then you pick between a plant or animal form. Choices present themselves between the two that enable them to combine and evolve. And the progression of events that follow will determine how this first seed of creation evolves into an elaborate maze. Similar to this. When planted, the seed produces a shoot; which in turn sprouts a branch; from which flowers bloom. The branch is crushed by a bowling ball, which can be cylindrical or conical in shape. Apples can be eaten after the branch is crushed by a bowling ball, which causes the seed to produce another apple seed. Birds eat seeds and then create an egg, one that hatches into a carrot. Two elephants fight over possession of the carrot and then it breaks into smaller seeds.

The game is beautiful and scary thanks to its “If-Then” nature. When playing the game, you'll come to understand why a bowling ball holds a brain inside of it. A further example of nature’s unpredictability would be the birth of a man-devouring plant seed. When you select a fly for your test subject, you assume that plant will hatch and grow into a man-eating beast. However, the fly naturally outgrows its mode of consumption by instinctively grabbing the fledgling plant to chew on. Then, it receives a deadly blow from a flyswatter before turning into a swarm of smaller flying insects. Mitoza is a game of the mind where your dreams are realized and your worst nightmares come true. The game has no end and can't be stopped. Before they migrated to the console, these games were available on PCs.ash's heyday. But when Flash died, they also went to dust.
